My Goals for the Project
Refugee project
Establish/finalise what structure a presence from the UNLC is both achievable and necessary/beneficial for the refugee community.
Potential option: UNLC solicitor and students (how many?) visiting community centres to provide presentations/discussion circles on areas of law that the refugee community is lacking an understanding/access to.
Following presentation/discussion circles, allowing for individuals to seek advice from solicitors. Once relationships established/trust built between community and solicitors, hopefully greater levels of people seeking advice
Pro to visiting the community during already established community meetings, greater changes of attendance by community members.
2. Complete proposal for Shaun
Read through existing proposal created by Alma and William
Identify existing obstacles/gaps in proposal
How does current COVID restrictions provide barrier to project?
What will be the long-term barrier of COVID restrictions on the project?
Must not overpromise and underdeliver. What is an achievable commitment that can be proposed for the UNLC?
What specifics does Shaun need from a directorial perspective? What specific are established by Alma and William, and what still needs to be determined?
3. Present proposal to community liaisons
Does the proposal meet the needs of the community?
What (if any) adjustments do they think are necessary to ensure needs are met.
Important Considerations
Need to ensure ongoing, institutionalisation of project, not a one off connection between UNLC and refugee community
Cultural sensitivities – both men and women solicitors needed to ensure women comfortable talking to solicitors
Language barriers – need to ensure that any information communicated is properly understood by individuals in the community
Potentially creating fact sheets (both for individuals in the community and for students at the UNLC) about areas of law, cultural sensitivities issues etc.
